The competition to get on Business North Carolina Magazine’s Mid-Market “Fast 40” list is getting tougher every year. Just ask Casey Watkins, co-founder of Symmetry Financial Group, an insurance marketing company based near Asheville, North Carolina. When Symmetry earned a spot on the list, Watkins wrote, “We are honored to be recognized on the Fast 40 list, an achievement that reflects the hard work and outstanding efforts of the entire Symmetry team.”
Over 70 different companies, all headquartered in North Carolina and ranging in net annual revenue from $10 million to $500 million, applied for the coveted Fast 40 distinction. Rather than comparing applicant companies on size, the accounting firm Cherry Bekaert LLP compiled this year’s list based on sustainable revenue and employment growth over the past three years.
This is Symmetry Financial Group’s first year making the Fast 40 list, although the North Carolina-based insurance marketing company has been expanding its annual net income and employee base for over a decade now. Founded in 2009, Symmetry was founded on the belief that insurance marketing could improve with agent-focused systems that allowed for exponential growth at the agent level, agency level, and beyond. The founders, Brandon Ellison, Brian Pope, and Casey Watkins had all spent their careers in insurance and decided to build a business based on this experience. What resulted was Symmetry Financial Group.
Not your average insurance company, Symmetry Financial Group specializes in getting the right marketing tools to the right people in the industry. Symmetry gives its agents the ability to shop for policies that are the best-fit for their client’s needs by comparing coverage from 30 top-rated insurance carriers, resulting in flexible coverage options for life insurance, mortgage protection, critical illness insurance, disability insurance, and retirement protection, to name a few.
For the past four years in a row, Symmetry Financial Group has been recognized as an Inc. 5000 fastest-growing company for these efforts by Inc. magazine. As of 2019, Symmetry ranks 1,395/5,000 on Inc.’s list of fastest-growing companies. Further, Symmetry was rated as having top company culture by Entrepreneur Magazine in 2017 and 2018. In 2019, Symmetry gained further recognition on Business North Carolina Magazine’s Mid-Market “Fast 40” list.
Leadership Stylings of Brandon Ellison
Building a nationally and locally recognized business starts with building great teams. Someone thoroughly acquainted with building solid teams is Symmetry Financial’s co-owner and co-founder, Brandon Ellison. Before entering the world of insurance, Ellison received a degree in accounting from the University of Alabama. This degree would later serve Ellison and the Symmetry team in some of their earlier endeavors.
Symmetry Financial Group’s beginnings were built on insurance expertise and a renewed approach to insurance marketing. The group’s founders believed that productivity and high sales did not have to come at the expense of one’s personal or family life.
Maintaining work-life balance continues to play a significant role in Symmetry Financial’s company culture today. Agents have the option of working part-time or full-time and can set their own schedule to attain their own levels of success.
Symmetry Financial’s employee base has increased significantly since 2009, as has its national agent force, which is active in every state. This growth is directly related to the company’s founders’ intimate knowledge of financial markets and a knack for finding efficient business strategies.
When Symmetry Financial’s founders began looking toward expansion and started considering office spaces, they knew that they wanted to take an active role in the Swannanoa community. They saw potential in the small community that they deeply wanted to foster. Watkins, a Swannanoa native, saw the potential to grow a local business that preserved the rich history of the community while fostering the town’s growing economy. Ellison and Watkins began investing in Swannanoa real estate and eventually started several local businesses in the area, including Swannanoa’s Native Kitchen & Social Pub. Speaking to the success of the restaurant in 2017, Ellison said that “from a food and leadership standpoint, the creativity is where we want it to be.”
