Follow These Tips When Using LMS For Onboarding

The best onboarding programs aren’t just prepared by subject matter experts; they are built by teams who understand the vitality of mixing content and tools, or a learning management system in this case, thereby making the process attainable. Smart are those who invest in a learning management system for achieving this and ensure successful onboarding of new hires. Use a blended approach

The idea of incorporating LMS into employee onboarding might be mistaken by some. It does not mean to rely solely on LMS and abandon any face to face interaction and group training sessions. The approach is to go hand in hand. With blended approach, the onboarding process will comprise: elearning elements, group training sessions such as webinars, and  face-to-face meetings both formal and informal with HR professionals, managers, supervisors, and mentors. Add video

Adding video to an elearning course is very essential and employee onboarding is no different. Video makes any content personal and is much more engaging than text-only content hence, people prefer to watch it. Moreover, you can use existing staff to deliver some of the video content and maybe they can talk about how it is like to work in the organisation, about its culture, and cover other similar aspects. 

Create content from the perspective of the new hires

As obvious as it may sound, most organizations end up getting this wrong! One of the major problems with onboarding processes is that organizations approach it from their perspective and thus, end up ignoring the new hires and their interests. All they’re concerned about is conveying the rules, procedures, ways of doing things, and expectations from the employees. However, creating online onboarding courses allow you to fix this issue and look at it from the perspective of new hires. 

Personalise the content

Why will new employees be interested if they feel they’re not even being addressed? The tip is to personalise content to the extent you can as more the personalisation, the better it is. But, make sure to not add personalization in elearning onboarding courses by location. Instead, you must do it by job role or department. This is one of the most important points of all to create a successful employee training program. 

Add active learning elements

Yet another problem with onboarding and new recruits is that they are least involved in the sense that they just listen to and read the information conveyed. And, in most cases when they ask questions, they are usually provided with information the company wants them to know. Elearning gives you an opportunity to improve this by adding active learning elements. This can be done through gamification, scenarios, quizzes, puzzles, i.e. the content which new hires must participate in to complete. 

Get feedback and improve

Lastly, you must obtain feedback from employees who had recently been part of the onboarding process, particularly regarding the elearning course elements. As it is, these people are the perfect ones to understand what it’s like to join a new organisation. Further, evaluate it and act accordingly to improvise and fill in the gaps. Constantly working to improve what you do is the best bet to optimise results.
