1. Show off Your Skills
25% of hiring managers spend less than 30 seconds reviewing a resume while 40% spend less than 60 seconds. What this tells you is that you have a small window to impress your would-be employer. To ensure your resume works for you, show off your skills.
Start by adding a table showing your hard and soft skills sets. You should also highlight your skills to match the job description. Don’t forget to quantify your experience.
For instance, you can say that you helped the company “increase sales and revenue by 25%.” Quantifying your experience demonstrates how you contributed to the company’s bottom line.
2. Stand out with a Visually Appealing Resume
A lot of job recruiters don’t realize that design matters when it comes to creating resumes that work. If your resume is appealing, it stands out from the rest. Here is simple anatomy of a visually appealing resume.
Have your name and address near the header with a colored background or not. Below this, have a table showing your soft and hard skills. You can also include your prior work experience and education.
Remember, avoid hard to read fonts and never go overboard with boldface and italics. Don’t misrepresent your experience or education.
3. List Additional Experience
If you lack real-world experience, you can still prove your capability. How? With the extra skill experience section. In this section, you can include positions that are not even related to the job you are applying for. By doing so, you prove to the recruiter that you are the right candidate for the job.

4. Incorporate Relevant Keywords
Today, companies are using applicant tracking systems to screen resumes. These systems work by filtering resumes for specific keywords. If your resume is not tailored to these keywords for a specific job posting, it will be disqualified.
To ensure the ATS approves your resume, use keywords from the job description in your resume. Make sure they are used contextually and not unnatural.
5. Write a Specific Cover Letter
Your resume will go unnoticed if it’s not accompanied by a specific cover letter. Like your resume, you need to tailor your cover letter for the job posting. Doing so demonstrates to the hiring manager that you have done your research.
What you need to know is that your cover letter should not duplicate your resume. Instead, it should complement it. Its purpose is to interpret your resume that works.
