The Dos and Don’ts of Web Design

Managing web design effectively is like walking a tightrope; there are pitfalls and problems of all sorts that you can encounter, so you need to take a balanced approach to get the best results.

With that in mind, here are some common missteps that many sites make that you should avoid, as well as some sensible routes that you should endeavor to take in your own web design attempts.

Do aim for design cohesion

A website will be easier to use if important elements like the layout and interface are unified across every page. This will not only help with usability, but will also give you the opportunity to present your content and branding in a consistent way.

Of course if you do not have the ability to tackle the nuts and bolts of good web design in-house, it makes sense to work with an expert design company like Parachute Design. You can find out more about the services they offer on their website.

Don’t forget about performance

If you spend all of your time tinkering with the look and feel of your website but forget to make sure that pages actually load quickly, you could see bounce rates skyrocket.

For this reason it is important to keep an eye on page load speed and make sure that it is lower than 3 seconds, or more ideally 2 seconds. Factors that have a negative impact on performance include large, uncompressed media files and excessive use of intensive theme scripting. Addressing these issues and still finding performance is struggling will suggest that your hosting provider is to blame.

Do organize content for readability

No matter what kind of website you run, each page will likely be made up of a combination of text content and images. To engage visitors and meet their needs, rather than putting them off immediately, this content needs to be orchestrated for ease of consumption.

Rule one in this context is to avoid cramming all of the text on a page into a single block. Instead, break it up using punctuation, paragraphs and images so that it can be digested in a more bite-sized, manageable way.

You can also improve readability as well as boosting conversions by using the layout to draw attention to the most important aspects of the page. This will usually include the call to action, which is in itself an essential element to include.

Don’t dabble with intrusive pop-ups

There are a whole host of common bugbears that web users have with the sites they visit, but pop-ups are the most enduring and widely used of the bunch.

That is not to say that pop-ups do not have a place in good web design; it is merely a case of knowing how to use them, rather than outlawing them outright.

One option is to time the pop-ups so that they only appear after a visitor has been using the site for several minutes. This will give you time to get them hooked before bombarding them. Another is to only have pop-ups trigger when users hit a certain point on a page, showing that they are interested by having scrolled through.

Lots of other effective strategies and problematic mistakes can enter into the web design process, but with the right team at your back and a healthy dose of personal experience to call upon, you should be able to turn any business site into something to be proud of.
