All you need to know on WCAG

The importance in Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are growing for businesses and organizations. It is all about ensuring that web content is accessible to all people. The WCAG works by giving a step-by-step set-up of all the required technical requirements for websites, so they can ensure they are accessible for all people of different kinds of disabilities.

  • WCAG Requirements

The requirements are extensive and cover all of the digital elements that can be barriers for those with a number of different disabilities. These guidelines may even be invisible to those without disabilities but are put in place to ensure that everyone has the same opportunity and equal chance when accessing online platforms.  Some of the examples of what the WCAG addresses include:

  • Audio content needs to include captions, so people who are deaf are able to understand the information that is being presented online. They also require written transcript. This means that people who want to listen to the audio are able to, but they may not be able to turn the sound on for example.
  • Images must also contain descriptive alternative text. This is to ensure that people who are blind are able to understand the images that are on the screen.
  • On-page text must also be realizable without changing the page displays. This is to ensure that people with vision disabilities are still able to magnify the content presented and can then have an easier time reading it.

These are just a small number of the examples of what the WCAG addresses and the rest of these guidelines can also be found here.

WCAG is also developed by a working group of experts and is universally accepted and now adopted by all online. It is also now continuing to be pushed out, so it is now more important than ever for websites to ensure that they are keeping to these guidelines enforced. There are tools like Siteimprove WCAG compliance tool that can help you staying compliant, so that you do not fall short to the potential issues that may arise, as and when you also change parts of your website and online presence.

There have also now been a number of different versions released of WCAG, that is also continuing to be reviewed, as and when potential changes are needing to be made. People with disabilities should be able to experience online without any potential issues and this is what WCAG is all about. As new technology is released, this can play a role on the potential changes that need to be made for WCAG. The current versions that exist include 1.0, 2.0, 2.1 and now 3.0 has recently had a draft released. The guidelines are also divided into three levels. These being WCAG Level A, WCAG Level AA and WCAG Level AAA. The latter would mean that organizations are exceeding the current requirements, so this is something that they should be looking to achieve. The WCAG gives a clear guideline for websites to follow, so they are ensuring an equal opportunity for all digitally.
